Stored Memories: Women Then and Now

The series, Stored memories: the lives of women then and now was inspired by my family’s history of strong women who survived the chaos of World War II, postwar America, and the 1960’s/70’s, while holding on to a sense of themselves. It revolves around ideas of femininity, grounded in domestic life and stems from the objects that I excavated from our collective attic, basement and garage. The objects, representing three generations of women, included items carefully stored in boxes, side by side with moldy bits of commonplace household goods, casually forgotten, which provided an unexpected treasure trove that brought to light their active and complex lives. These photographs reveal traces of perfect hostesses, working women, caring for themselves, our families and our homes, surrounding them with beauty.
